We would happily plan an Algarve holiday in October around lunch outdoors, time by the sea and a few days exploring, provided the whole week did not depend on swimming. That is the distinction we would make before booking anything, because a comfortable afternoon on a terrace and a warm pool are two different things.
Our advice is to choose a home you will enjoy in the evening, keep the beach days flexible and bring something warmer than the clothes you expect to wear at lunchtime. Here is how we would put that trip together.
What the October averages actually tell us
We use Faro as a coastal reference. The IPMA climate normals for 1991–2020 give these October averages, rather than a forecast for your dates or every part of the Algarve.

Six rain days do not mean six days of continuous rain, or a guarantee that the rest will be sunny. We would use the averages to pack, then the local IPMA forecast to decide each day’s plans.
We keep the beach day movable
For a week in October, we suggest pencilling in two beach afternoons without deciding which days they have to be. A walk along the seafront, lunch nearby and an hour on the sand leave room to change the plan, especially when travelling with children who may have a different idea of beach weather from their parents.
Before swimming, we recommend checking the beach notice, sea conditions and whether lifeguards are on duty, following the Portuguese maritime authority’s beach guidance. Sunshine is no assurance of safe water, and we recommend checking supervision for the particular beach and date.

A pool deserves a separate conversation
When comparing villas, our first questions concern the pool, before the photograph decides anything. Is heating available for those dates, is it included in the quoted price, and does it need to be arranged before arrival? We also suggest asking what temperature the host aims for, without treating that as a guarantee in every weather condition.
Our next question is where everyone will sit after dinner. A comfortable living room, enough indoor dining seats and heating in the rooms you will use matter more to an October stay than an extra row of sun loungers. With young children, we recommend checking the pool’s access arrangements as carefully as its temperature.
Choose your base around the ordinary parts of the day
For a trip without a hire car, we suggest looking at the actual walk from the front door to food shops, restaurants and the seafront. A listing described as being in Albufeira or Vilamoura still needs a closer look at the map, particularly if your group includes a pushchair or someone who finds hills difficult.
If marina walks and meals nearby are your idea of a good afternoon, our shortlist includes Vilamoura. For a more independent villa stay, we suggest agreeing whether everyone is comfortable driving out for dinner before choosing a quieter address. We also recommend confirming opening days with any restaurant or attraction the trip depends on.
Pack for lunch outside and the journey home afterwards
Our packing list combines light daytime clothes with a jumper, long trousers, a light waterproof jacket and shoes suitable for walking. Swimwear still belongs in the bag, but we recommend bringing more than sandals. A small day bag makes it easier to carry the extra layer instead of returning to the house before dinner.
For a rainy spell, we suggest keeping one deliberately unambitious alternative ready, perhaps a leisurely lunch, some indoor shopping or an afternoon cooking at the house. Our preference is to swap the day’s plans around, rather than drive across the region chasing a sunny symbol on an app.
