Quarteira makes a beach day easy. You can walk along the seafront, stop for coffee, spend a few hours on the sand and sit down for lunch without moving the car. If that sounds more useful than another drive to a remote cove, give it a day.
The town sits beside Vilamoura in the municipality of Loulé. Its appeal is the combination of a working town and a beach: apartment buildings, places to buy groceries, cafés and the sea close at hand. For a first visit, we suggest keeping the day local: a walk, time on the beach and lunch within easy reach.
Start with the promenade
The Avenida Marginal runs beside the beach and gives you an easy way to get your bearings. Take a walk before choosing where to settle. You can see where the beach access points are, check menus and find a meeting place that everyone in your group will recognise.
For a family day, that first short walk is useful. We would choose an access point near the services your group needs, then use the promenade for any longer walk. If someone prefers a café to an afternoon in the sun, you can still spend the day in the same area.
What the beach is like
Quarteira has a long sandy seafront divided by concrete breakwaters. It is an urban beach, with the town immediately behind the promenade. Turismo de Portugal lists parking, showers, restaurants and accessible beach facilities; check the particular access and seasonal services you intend to use.
Choose your swimming spot according to the flags and lifeguards on the day. The breakwaters are landmarks, not places to climb or use as swimming platforms. Outside the bathing season, do not assume that a sunny afternoon means a supervised beach.
Leave time for the fishing side of Quarteira
If you enjoy food markets, make the fish market area part of your morning rather than an extra stop at the end of the day. Ask locally about the current trading location and hours before setting off specifically to shop.
There is a reason to check: the Junta de Freguesia reported in May 2026 that construction of the new municipal market had begun, with the future building planned for Passeio das Dunas. That announcement is not confirmation that the new market is open. Older travel guides and map listings may describe a different arrangement.
If you are staying in a holiday home with a kitchen, ask the fishmonger what is available and how to cook it. We suggest doing food shopping on the way back to the house so you can put it straight in the fridge.
A day that does not need a timetable
Begin with coffee and a walk along the promenade. Add a market visit if it fits the day’s opening hours, then choose your patch of beach. For lunch, read the menu before taking a table and check whether fish is priced by portion or weight.
Keep the afternoon flexible. Stay by the sea, head back for a rest or continue towards Vilamoura for a change of scene. If you want to visit the marina, look up a walking route from your actual starting point and allow for the return journey. The distance from one end of Quarteira is not the distance from the other.
What to bring and when to go
Pack water, sun protection and shoes for walking on hot paving. A light layer is useful if your walk runs into the evening. For anyone with limited mobility, confirm the access closest to your accommodation; an accessible-beach listing does not describe every approach to the sand.
For an autumn visit, use the day’s forecast to decide between swimming and a seafront walk. Our guide to Algarve weather in October explains the seasonal planning questions. If your next beach day should have more dunes and less town, try Quinta do Lago beach.

Frequently asked questions
What is Quarteira beach like?
Quarteira is an urban sandy beach beside the Avenida Marginal, divided by concrete breakwaters. It suits a day that combines time on the sand with cafés, shops and a seafront walk.
Can you combine Quarteira and Vilamoura in one outing?
Yes. Plan your route from your actual starting point in Quarteira to the part of Vilamoura you want to visit, and allow time for the return. A promenade walk and a visit to the marina make different parts of the same outing.
Is the new Quarteira market already open?
The local parish council announced the start of construction in May 2026. That announcement does not confirm an opening date. Check the current trading location and hours locally before making a special trip.
